When filling or performing transloading operations, proper weight distribution is vital. Improperly loaded trucks or intermodal shipping containers pose a safety hazard to employees and the general public. Unmonitored loading of trucks could potentially eat into revenues in the form of citations for non-compliant weight, excess stress on equipment and underutilized loading capacity. Monitoring of weight during the loading process can reduce, or eliminate, the need to return to the loading area to make adjustments.

Filling a trailer with bulk items, like scrap metal, also requires continuous monitoring. Once the weight of a trailer and its contents hit a pre-determined value, that particular trailer is ready to be hauled away. In this example, continuous weight monitoring not only maximizes the waste disposal process due to fewer disposal runs, but can simultaneously confirm axle weight and gross vehicle weight (GVW) compliance.

Portable static scales are used in transload and filling applications because of the ability to calculate weight distribution by using individual wheel weights. The trailer being loaded rests on the scale pads until a particular weight is reached. Then, the trailer can be picked up and the contents dealt with.

Common applications include scrap metal collection, collection and disposal of manufacturing waste and the loading docks of semi-trailers at freight terminals.
