From 2018 to 2024, traffic-lines GmbH (a division of Volkmann Strassen- und Verkehrstechnik GmbH) implemented a specialized bridge protection system for the A40 Rheinbrücke-Neuenkamp near Duisburg, Germany. This bridge is a vital part of the highway infrastructure, carrying high volumes of traffic in both directions—toward Essen and Venlo. The objective was to protect the bridge from overweight vehicles using an automated, accurate, and durable system. The project involved a custom-engineered solution to monitor four lanes using Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) technology, integrated with an automated barrier system. Vehicles exceeding legal weight limits are detected and diverted before entering the bridge, minimizing the risk of structural damage. One of the key challenges was the bridge’s complex three-directional protection structure, which, combined with the requirement to use foundationless traffic sign bridges, significantly limited the available installation footprint.
Intercomp was selected to supply the core technology, based on the accuracy, durability, and ease of integration of its products. The solution included high-performance strip sensors and the WIMLogix controller, which enabled real-time data processing and seamless integration with the customer’s existing software.
Key requirements included precise weight measurement at highway speeds, long-term reliability in heavy traffic conditions, and low-impact installation. Intercomp’s solution met all criteria while supporting full automation of overweight vehicle detection and diversion.
As a result, traffic-lines GmbH achieved a highly effective, low-maintenance system that safeguards the bridge, improves traffic safety, and reduces manual oversight. The project demonstrates the value of Intercomp's technology in critical infrastructure applications and sets a benchmark for future bridge protection systems across the German highway network.
