FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Minneapolis, MN - Installation has begun on Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) sites along the Ohio Turnpike, a multi-year project where Intercomp strain gauge strip sensors were selected to be incorporated in WIM systems on the 241 mile (288 km) toll highway. The strip sensors are to be installed in dual threshold configurations in over 55 lanes throughout the toll road.

Sensor performance and system uptime were among the factors used to determine suppliers, with ASTM E1318 Type III accuracy (6% GVW) used as a performance metric for the WIM systems. Based on proven strain gauge technology, which is widely recognized as the most accurate means to weigh a vehicle, the Intercomp WIM sensors provide accuracy, temperature stability, and ease of calibration and operation over time.

Installed in 3-inch (70 mm) channels cut into the pavement, the WIM sensors detect and measure axle and gross vehicle weights at low and high speeds.  The sensors operate in pairs installed in the roadway surface, enabling rapid installation, calibration, and low-maintenance operation over time.

The project includes installation of multiple sites along the toll system which will utilize WIM for both commercial vehicle weight enforcement and data collection. Saskatoon-based International Road Dynamics (IRD) will contribute their extensive WIM experience to install, integrate, and maintain the WIM sites. Conduent Inc. was selected as the overall toll system integrator to facilitate additional upgrades to the entire tolling system. Tied into the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission (OTIC) systems, the sites will enable monitoring and protection from overweight vehicles with options into 2035.
